Please help my horse rescue

From Bonnie Baber

I operate a small horse rescue & I'm struggling to continue caring for these beautiful souls that have lived a life of service to humans and deserve a peaceful retirement. We desperately need food & veterinary care.

Please help my horse rescue

About my rescue: Ever since I rescued my first “Kill pen” horse in 2019 here in southern Louisiana, I have been on a whirlwind ride. I have rescued more than 16 horses from kill pens, most of which have come to my farm to retire in peace. Most of them were in poor condition and malnourished when I rescued them. I also realized that the majority were not rideable or in rideable condition. They were older than I was originally told, and had a variety of health conditions that require continuous veterinary and farrier care, as well as medication, daily supplements and insect control to keep them comfortable and happy.

What drives me: My mom and I raised horses together throughout my childhood, which cultivated my intense love and compassion for animals and my desire to ensure that more horses that have lived a life of service to humans don’t face a final inhumane ending in a Mexican slaughterhouse due to our country's horrible export laws. Rather, they can live out their lives in my peaceful pasture. They are permanent members of my sanctuary until their time is up; it’s a privilege to care for them and make their lives what they should’ve always been! This is the hardest work I've ever done, but making sure everyone’s needs are met is so rewarding.

Our situation and needs: The horse sanctuary I started just five years ago is a small private horse rescue, not a 501c3, so I am not eligible to be listed as a charitable entity nor do I qualify for fundraiser programs on Facebook, etc., although I still desperately need financial help. Here in Louisiana, we are facing a summer full of pesky insects, allergens that cause respiratory illnesses, and of course, we must pay for grain, veterinary care, deworming medications, hoof trimming and dental care for the herd. We do grow our own Bahia hay, which helps. Last summer and fall, however, we had a terrible drought and were unable to have the ample hay cutting that we’ve had in previous years. Most of the horses are not adoptable. One is partially blind, a few have hoof, leg and arthritic problems, and more than half are senior citizens. Several of my horses are also overdue to have their teeth floated, which is performed by a veterinarian. I'm really struggling to keep my dream of saving horses alive and need your help. In the process, I'm also campaigning to end export-for-slaughter practices in our country!  I’m asking you to please help me continue to help them.

My horses are the absolute loves of my life and they are helping me keep my sanity during these troubling times. I would be so very grateful to you if you could donate to the horses if you’re able to do so, and I assure you that I will pay it forward during my lifetime, as saving animals and helping preserve innocent, defenseless life on our planet are my main goals in life. I’m grateful to you for giving me your time today and I hope the Lord blesses you for your love, kindness and concern for the animals. With Love and Gratitude ~ Bonnie @ Acadiana Horse Sanctuary
